Just the weather?

Okay, so here’s the deal…

I’ve been taking photos in some form or another for almost 20 years, since I was a teen. I’ve gone from a Polaroid instant camera to a 110, to a fully manual 35mm to a Yashika Model A and Brownies to my current digital camera. I’ve had many a times when I felt like I was in a dry spell and just could not find any subjects and whatnot. I know what a creative block is, and I usually work my way through it.

I’m wondering if this time is different.

Maybe it is just the season. I have never really enjoyed shooting in the winter. I like to work with more color, and since I do primarily outdoor shoots I end up with a lot of grays. Mississippi can be a very drab place in the winter. Often I will switch out to black and white for the winter months and shoot with red filters for high contrast. More cityscape stuff, more portrait work, etc. Spring and summer months I migrate back to color with very little black and white. Yeah, I know, it seems funny to talk about shooting styles like clothing styles, but that is how I think.

I feel like I am spinning my wheels. I never seem to be able to make time to get out and record any images, and when I do, I find myself in a rut. I’ve got a large photography project that I have worked toward off and on for a little while now, but when I start working on it… just seems like such a far off long shot….

I’m sure I will get out of this creative funk soon. I hope so. Maybe it is just the weather.

Go Red For Women Luncheon and Auction 2010

Posted in charity, general, photography with tags , , on January 26, 2010 by Stacy Baugher

Well, it is later than I was hoping for, but not as late as I was afraid it would be.

I have just finished matting and framing the two prints that I am donating to the Go Red For Women 2010 Luncheon and Auction in Jackson, Mississippi. Last year I donated a larger print and it went for quite a bit, so this year I am doing two slightly smaller ones and seeing how that does. The image sizes on the prints are around 9.5 x 14, and I had to matte them myself to try and save on the money. I am not happy with the matte and framing, but I am extremely happy with the images. Both where printed on Kodak Metallic Paper, and they absolutly shine when you see them in person. It is such a shame that the computer images does not begin to do them justice. They realy are something that has to be seen to appreciated.

And before I get some comments, I know that signing the matte is not the proper thing to do. The problem is, the prints metallic finish has such a high gloss, a pencil would not take to them. Instead I signed the backs of the prints and wrote the names on them. The silver signature on a black matte is kind of my own ego.

Also, you may have noticed that I have made additional changes to the site. I was just not happy with the presentation of the photographs on a white background. With this one, I am not pleased about the orange text, but I will be making a custom header this week to personalize the site a little more.

Well, that’s about it. Long, hard day at work tomorrow, and hopefully some time to get out a little more for some photos. I still need to set up a make-shift studio to attempt some self portraits, and that may happen by this weekend.

Goodnight all…

Not enough time!!!!

Posted in general on January 26, 2010 by Stacy Baugher

With the changes going on at my fulltime+ day job, the wife’s teaching schedule, the baby and everything else, I have had no time to post any photos. I do have a few that are ready, I just have not been able to sit at the computer without Emily trying to discover what all the buttons do. You would be surprised how quickly a 22 month old can lock down a computer!

I’ve also got the Go Red For Women luncheon/auction prints to finish framing tonight. I have to deliver them tomorrow…. :o

But, I did find this really cool blog entry over at Photo This called Never Travel With A Photographer. I’ve heard these comments directed at myself several times, so I really enjoyed it. The rest of the blog has some nice images as well. If you’re interested, check it out.

Pictures posted tomorrow. I’ll probably schedule a few to go up for the rest of the week.

More from the past…

I started shooting in cemeteries early on. It is really odd how it started, and to long a story for here, but know that even from the first I established myself rules. Among those rules are you do not deface anything within a cemetery. I have never, as I have seen others do, alter the state of any statuary or memorials in an effort to get “The Shot.” I’ve had bands want me to shoot them in a cemetery with all sorts of prop imagery, and I turned them down cold. If I cannot get images from what is there, I move on.

Cemeteries contain the remains of peoples loved ones. They stand as memorials for those who passed on before. Every marker in a cemetery has the right to be remembered by somebody.

Changes, finally…

I finally was able to get some changes done to the site. Not it will be more of a blog about my photos and photography than an photoblog.

I’ll be adding a couple of tabs a little later with a few gallery images, and a few other things as I get the time.

Till then, enjoy!
