Okay, so here’s the deal…
I’ve been taking photos in some form or another for almost 20 years, since I was a teen. I’ve gone from a Polaroid instant camera to a 110, to a fully manual 35mm to a Yashika Model A and Brownies to my current digital camera. I’ve had many a times when I felt like I was in a dry spell and just could not find any subjects and whatnot. I know what a creative block is, and I usually work my way through it.
I’m wondering if this time is different.
Maybe it is just the season. I have never really enjoyed shooting in the winter. I like to work with more color, and since I do primarily outdoor shoots I end up with a lot of grays. Mississippi can be a very drab place in the winter. Often I will switch out to black and white for the winter months and shoot with red filters for high contrast. More cityscape stuff, more portrait work, etc. Spring and summer months I migrate back to color with very little black and white. Yeah, I know, it seems funny to talk about shooting styles like clothing styles, but that is how I think.
I feel like I am spinning my wheels. I never seem to be able to make time to get out and record any images, and when I do, I find myself in a rut. I’ve got a large photography project that I have worked toward off and on for a little while now, but when I start working on it… just seems like such a far off long shot….
I’m sure I will get out of this creative funk soon. I hope so. Maybe it is just the weather.
